European Exploration of the New World by Crystal Lake

Before reading Encounter, students will be broken into groups and given a task. Each group will complete a power point presentation that researches an explorer of the new world. The power point will include history of the explorer, major contributions, area settled and for what country, and what purpose the explorer had. The students will use two internet websites: Who Goes There: European Exploration of the New World http://library.thinkquest.org/J002678F/welcome.htmand Voyage of Exploration: Discovering New Horizons (http://library.thinkquest.org/C001692/english/index.php3?subject=home) to find their information. After the power point is completed, students will present to their classmates.

While introducing the Lewis and Clark expedition I will use the following two websites. The first website, http://www.nationalgeographic.com/lewisandclark/, is very informational and is organized in a way that is easy for students to navigate through. One aspect of the website is that it includes a journey log of the expedition. The log breaks the trip down into smaller sections and provides other interesting details that help the students stay engaged in the lesson. The Journey log also has interactive maps that show the students the exact rivers that were used to reach the Pacific Ocean. These maps will help the students tremendously when we use maps to trace the routes of famous western expansion explorers. This website also provides photos of places along the route and pictures of Sacagawea, who was an important member of the Corps of Discovery. The other website I will use is http://www.nationalgeographic.com/west/. This site is an interactive journey to the west. The students will follow along the route of Lewis and Clark and will have to make decisions in order to survive the dangerous expedition.
